Architect in Residence

Our Second and Third multi-age class studied the Portland Bridges this year, which included working with an Architect in Residence. They learned about types of bridges, as well as the engineering behind bridges. Students explored how tension and compression forces act on different bridge types. They learned about the variety of materials used by engineers in the design and construction of modern bridges. Their final project was to design their own bridge structures! The study culminated in a walking field trip in downtown Portland. Students were able to walk across some of Portland's bridges and learn about the history and engineering of each one.
